Brain Gain summer camps

Last summer, we worked with Cradle to Career Miramichi (New Brunswick), a community partnership co-chaired by Mayor Adam Lordon and New Brunswick Senator David Adams Richards, a local resident and author. As part of a collective effort to prevent summer learning loss, we provided two free summer literacy camps for children in grades one to three, who were not reading at grade level.

The days were filled with fun activities that focused on reading and writing, along with math, science, and arts and crafts. Especially valuable were the one- to-one reading sessions with a tutor that enabled the campers to improve their reading skills and expand their vocabularies. The students’ reading assessment at the beginning of the school year revealed that all the children either maintained or increased their reading level over the summer.

"It means everything to know that my daughter had this opportunity and this was here for her. It’s amazing. Every parent should take advantage of this."
