Learning After The Bell

We are expanding in Alberta! This year, with the support of Alberta Education, we are proud to offer after-school tutoring for Indigenous children ages 5–12 in Lethbridge and Grande Prairie.

Our volunteers share the same feelings of pride and success as the learners.

Many of these children are struggling in school, and fun is the last word they’ll use to describe reading or writing—or math or learning. But our volunteers know teaching literacy in ways that are fun can achieve big results. Homework supplements classroom education, and getting kids excited about homework can result in big gains in their confidence, reading, and writing.

At Avondale School in Grande Prairie, we work with classroom teachers and administrators to support the students’ learning styles and needs. Our volunteers create a positive, fun learning space after school to support students with their homework, while helping to spark excitement about reading and begin laying the all-important foundation for strong literacy skills. The program also boosts a sense of community and builds relationships outside of traditional school hours.

It has helped me read more books.

I am truly enjoying meeting with the children at Avondale School. I have found it rewarding to meet these children and to help them with their reading skills, to play games, and to hopefully support their goals in a positive way.
