Manulife Homework Club

Wasim Al-Khanati, tutor and former student, at the Homework Club at Manulife Financial

In 2010, when I was a Grade 7 student, I discovered Frontier College. My friend recommended that I sign up for a Homework Club at an office nearby. When I arrived, I learned that it was offered by Frontier College and hosted at Manulife Financial, and that it was a safe and supportive place to go after school.

What surprised me was what I gained from this experience. My tutor, Rachel, helped with my school work and she listened to any issues I was having at school. She figured out the best way for me to learn. I felt more and more confident each week, and our connection played a very important role in my transition to high school.

Today, I am a volunteer tutor at the same Homework Club to offer kids in my community the same mentorship that was offered to me. Students at this age need a lot more than just help with their homework, and I enjoy reading with the kids and being a role model to them.

Manulife provides funding, space and employee volunteers for one after-school Homework Club in Toronto.

I take pride in knowing that I am helping kids gain valuable reading skills and a new perspective on the possibilities for their lives.
